OSHA 1926.1407 requires cranes to remain outside a 20-foot minimum approach distance from energized power lines unless specific Phase 2 precautions are in place. Power line contact is the single leading cause of crane fatalities. OSHA 1926.1427 requires crane operators to be certified or qualified before operating any equipment with a capacity of 2,000 lbs or more.
