NFPA 70E Article 130.5 requires employers to perform an arc flash risk assessment before any work near energized electrical parts above 50 volts. This template includes the assessment form and a reference guide for implementing the standard.
The arc flash boundary is the distance from an energized part at which the incident energy equals 1.2 cal/cm² — the threshold for causing a second-degree burn. NFPA 70E requires this boundary to be calculated using IEEE 1584 equations or simplified tables. Equipment must be labeled with the arc flash boundary, incident energy level, and required PPE before anyone performs work.
NFPA 70E PPE Categories (Category 1 through 4) are determined by the incident energy calculation. PPE must be arc-rated to at least the incident energy expected for the task. Category 1 requires minimum 8 cal/cm²; Category 4 requires 40+ cal/cm². Standard cotton clothing provides zero arc flash protection — workers in Category 2 or higher areas need arc-rated garments.
NFPA 70E Section 130.2 requires a written energized electrical work permit whenever work within the restricted approach boundary is unavoidable. The permit must document the reason work cannot be de-energized, hazard analysis, PPE requirements, shock/arc flash boundaries, and supervisory approval. The 2024 edition of NFPA 70E introduced several significant changes: expanded requirements for working near exposed energized parts, updated incident energy calculation parameters, revised approach boundary distances, and enhanced training requirements for qualified persons.
