H2S is common in sewers, manholes, septic tanks, and excavations with organic material. Smell dissipates quickly at high concentrations — don't rely on odor detection. Rapid incapacitation at high levels. IDLH: 50 ppm.
CO is produced by combustion engines, gas-powered equipment, heating systems, and hot work operations in or near the space. Colorless, odorless — requires direct monitoring. IDLH: 1,200 ppm.
Atmospheric conditions are not uniform in confined spaces. Methane and CO2 are heavier than air — they settle to the bottom. Lighter gases accumulate at the top. Test at multiple points before declaring a space safe.
Atmospheric conditions can change during work — equipment operating inside the space, ventilation failure, groundwater intrusion, heat buildup. Monitoring must continue throughout the entry, not just at the start.
